A band all the way from Britain: Arctic Monkeys
(Current) Band Members: Alex Turner (vocalist, lead guitarist), Jamie Cook (guitarist), Matt Helders (drummer, backing vocals), and Nick O'Malley (bass guitar).
Who they are: Arctic Monkeys are an English indie-rock band that are still up-and-coming. Formed in 2002, they rose in popularity by fans spreading demo-tapes on the internet. By 2006 their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, became the fastest-selling debut album in British music history (although it has been recently surpassed by Leona Lewis). They have toured mostly in Britain and other parts of Europe, but have also played several sold out concerts and festivals here in the United States.
This is going to be their second time at the Austin City Limits Festival and we predict that the crowd they will attract will be huge even if their slot coincides with bigger bands such as Pearl Jam or Ben Harper and Relentless7 .
Are they going to be big: We think that they have the potential to get really really big. However, we think that for them to reach that potential they will need to solidify their style. They currently do have catchy songs, some of them have reached the top of the charts in the UK. However, they are rarely (if ever) played on the American radio stations, even on the alternative-rock ones. This is because even though they have been around since 2002, their style has not solidly progressed with the rest of alternative rock and their albums are mostly led by their singles. Having said that, they have proven that they can stand out, creating singles such as "Brianstorm", "Fluorescent Adolescent" and "505". When the band reaches their potential and settle on a style, they will then start getting to the top of the charts back home in Europe and here in the USA.
Notable Albums/EPs:
- Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006) - got top reviews and sold over 360,000 the first week.
- Who the Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys? (EP, 2006) - Heavily criticized because it was released only 3 months after their debut album.
- Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007) - Latest album of the Arctic Monkeys, it shows the band's progression and we can see their style forming.
Recommendation: If you are new to them, we recommend "Brianstorm", "Fluorescent Adolescent", and "505". Download them here FREE.
