A band from Brooklyn: Grizzly Bear.
For all Grizzly Bear songs go here.
Band Members: Daniel Rossen (songwriter/guitar), Ed Droste (songwriter/guitar), Chris Taylor (vocals/electronics/bass/different types of woodwind instruments), Christopher Bear (drums/vocals).
Who they are: Grizzly Bear formed in Brooklyn, and their music style is one that barely fits in any category, so they have been placed in the "experimental rock" group. The band started off with Ed Dorste trying to do a solo music project for his friends. He taped an album on a hand-held cassette tape recorder. The talented, multi-instrumentalist Christopher Bear joined Ed and added more instrumentation and backup vocals to the cassette. And thus their debut album Horn of the Plenty was made. At first, the tape was meant to be just for Dorste's friends, but it found it's way into the circulation in the underground New York music scene. The album gained momentum as they started touring with their new band-mates Daniel Rossen and Chris Taylor.
Since then, they have greatly rose in popularity, touring with big bands like Radiohead, TV On The Radio, and Feist. Grizzly Bear have even been on several television shows such as Jools Holland, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and The Late Show with David Letterman. They also made a few alternates of their songs in which they featured bands such as CSS, Band of Horses, and Atlas Sound.
Why we love them: Well, we are not the only ones that do - Radiohead's guitarist Johnny Greenwood has said that Grizzly Bear is his favorite band.
Their music is both earthy and out of this world. And one of the reasons that they are able to achieve that sound is because most of them are multi-instrumentalists and singers. Each of them has an amazing voice and we're sure that they could go completely a cappella (they have a video by La Blogotheque in which they walk the streets singing without instruments). And with their instruments to back them up, they are even more fantastic. They are a band that is definitely going to become BIG and at this year's ACL Music Festival they are obviously going to get even more recognition and popularity. We also absolutely recommend seeing them live because they truly do put on a great show.
Notable Albums/EPs:
- Horn of Plenty (2004) - their home-made debut album that launched them to popularity.
- Yellow House (2007) - got mass critical acclaim from numerous major publications.
- Veckatimest (2009) - their newest album that will be released on May 26th of this year, but is already getting great reviews.
